Direct Bury CAT5E can be directly placed into the ground or preferably in a conduit. Intermittent issues or system failures WILL occur if installing a non-underground cable or any wire for that matter in the ground or even in conduit. Water will build up in a conduit due to condensation and other circumstances and eventually hardening the jacket and eventually making it's way in to the copper. Direct Bury cables & Wires have a gel inside to protect from the elements. Many installers take short cuts or use what ever is on the truck that day, confirm the cable used is indeed underground.
